How to calculate a tip and split the bill

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people.

Example:
Bill = $120
Tip = 15%
People = 4

$120 × 15 ÷ 100 = $18 tip
$120 + $18 = $138 total
$138 ÷ 4 = $34.50 per person

Tip = $18
Total bill = $138
Each person pays = $34.50

When would you use a tip calculator?

A tip calculator helps you quickly work out how much to leave as a tip and the total amount to pay. It is useful in restaurants, cafés, hotels, taxis and anywhere a percentage-based gratuity is customary.

For example, if your bill is $80 and you want to leave a 15% tip, the tip is $12, making the total amount payable $92.

Tip: If you are splitting a bill between several people, calculate the tip on the full bill first and then divide the final total by the number of people.
