How to calculate percentage of a total

Divide the value by the total, then multiply the result by 100.

Example:
Value = 45
Total = 180

45 ÷ 180 = 0.25
0.25 × 100 = 25%

45 is 25% of 180

When would you use percentage of total?

Percentage of total is useful when you want to know what proportion one value represents of a larger total. It is commonly used for budgets, expenses, sales figures, survey results, test scores and business reporting.

For example, if 60 out of a total of 240 sales came from one product, divide 60 by 240 and multiply by 100. That product therefore represents 25% of total sales.

Important: The total value represents 100%. Make sure the number you are comparing is part of that same total before calculating the percentage.
